How to use the world clock

The Clocks tab is your main board — search for any city to add it, and it stays saved in your browser for next time. Each card shows the live local time, the date, the current UTC offset, and a sun or moon icon indicating whether it's currently daytime there. Your own device's local time is pinned as the first card automatically. The Converter tab does the opposite job: pick a specific date and time in one city, and see exactly what that moment looks like in every other city you've added — useful for translating "let's talk at 3pm my time" into what that actually means for someone on the other side of the world. The Meeting planner tab goes a step further, grading a proposed meeting time as good, workable, or unreasonable for each city based on ordinary working hours, with a color-coded 24-hour strip per city you can click directly to test a different hour.

Why time zone math is harder than it looks

Adding or subtracting a fixed number of hours works fine right up until it doesn't — daylight saving time shifts by an hour in many regions, on different calendar dates, and some countries observe it while their immediate neighbors don't. India, most of China, and a handful of other regions use time zone offsets that aren't even whole hours (India runs 30 minutes off the nearest hour boundary), and a few places change their offset seasonally in the opposite direction from what you'd expect based on hemisphere alone. This tool sidesteps all of that by relying on your browser's own built-in time zone database rather than a fixed offset table, so daylight saving transitions, half-hour offsets, and historical rule changes are all handled correctly without needing to track any of it yourself.

Scheduling across time zones without the back-and-forth

Anyone who's worked with a distributed team, a long-distance relationship, or an international client knows the specific annoyance of "does 9am work for you?" turning into three follow-up messages figuring out whose 9am that even was. The meeting planner here is built to shortcut that: add everyone's city once, and every proposed time immediately shows as reasonable, borderline, or a non-starter for each person, without anyone needing to do the arithmetic themselves. It's a small thing, but it's the difference between confidently sending "let's do 2pm UTC" and privately hoping you got the math right.

A few time zones worth knowing about

Most of the world sits on whole-hour offsets from UTC, which makes the half-hour and quarter-hour exceptions easy to trip over if you're not expecting them. India Standard Time is UTC+5:30, Nepal runs UTC+5:45, and several Australian regions sit at UTC+9:30 or UTC+10:30 rather than a clean whole number. It's also worth remembering that the Southern Hemisphere runs its daylight saving clock in the opposite direction from the Northern Hemisphere — Sydney and Auckland move their clocks forward around what is autumn in London or New York, not spring — so "everyone loses an hour in March" is a Northern Hemisphere assumption, not a global one. How accurate is the time shown here?+

The clock reads your device’s own system clock and applies the correct time zone rules — including daylight saving transitions — for each city, using your browser’s built-in time zone database. It’s only as accurate as your device’s clock, which on virtually every phone and computer is kept in sync automatically.

Does the day/night indicator account for the actual season?+

Yes. It’s calculated from each city’s latitude, longitude, and the current date using a standard sunrise/sunset formula, so a city near the Arctic Circle will correctly show far more daylight hours in June than in December, rather than assuming a fixed 6am-to-6pm day everywhere. It’s an approximation accurate to roughly fifteen minutes, not a precise astronomical calculation.

Why do some countries share one time zone while others span several?+

Time zone boundaries are drawn by governments, not by geography alone, and often follow political or economic convenience rather than strict 15-degree longitude bands. China spans a geographic width that would normally cross five time zones but uses a single one nationwide, while a geographically narrower country like the United States uses several — there’s no universal rule, which is exactly why a dedicated converter is more reliable than mental math.

What do the colors in the meeting planner mean?+

Each hour is graded on how reasonable it is for a work conversation in that city’s local time: roughly 9am to 6pm is marked as a good time, the early morning and evening fringes are marked as workable but not ideal, and late night through early morning is marked as an hour you generally shouldn’t ask someone to take a call. It’s a general guideline, not a reflection of anyone’s actual schedule or working hours.

Yes — the cities you add are remembered in your browser (not on a server), so they’ll be waiting for you next time you open this page on the same device and browser. Clearing your browser data will reset the list.

Why does my own city show a time zone abbreviation like GMT+1 instead of a name like BST?+

Numeric UTC offsets (like UTC+1) are unambiguous everywhere in the world, while abbreviations like BST, EST, or IST are sometimes used by multiple, unrelated time zones and can be genuinely confusing across regions. This tool uses the numeric offset everywhere for that reason, alongside the actual current local time.
